Mortal Kombat 12 could be announced at a PlayStation Showcase

, we believed NetherRealm would announce MK12 this week and this didn't happen. Something is telling us that we'll find out about Mortal Kombat 12 sooner rather than later.

After being teased earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav revealed the existence of Mortal Kombat 12 at a meeting, which Ed Boon could do nothing but confirm. Still, fans are hoping to get a glimpse of the follow-up to the best-selling Mortal Kombat game in history.

With that said, if NetherRealm will release Mortal Kombat 12 later this year, it's going to find itself in a three-way deadlock with Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8.

The next installments in the Street Fighter and Tekken series are coming out later this year, with massive DLC expansions for Guilty Gear Strive and King of Fighters scheduled before the year ends as well. But, you could also argue that now's the best time to release a new fighting game. After all, this year's Capcom Pro Tour will have a prize pool of $2 million.

With this much money on the line, there's enough hype surrounding the fighting game community for all the games to get their time in the limelight.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat, the sequel to 2021's live-action adaptation is scheduled to start production in September. If we're lucky, we'll get more updates about both upcoming Mortal Kombat projects sooner than later.
