Mortal Kombat is the biggest fighting video game franchise of all time and one of the highest-grossing media franchises in gaming history with an estimated $5 billion in profits. While the series has been around for over thirty years, its latest title has set a record for the most profitable game in the franchise.
Mortal Kombat 11 has reportedly earned $500 million in profits as of February 2022. Twitter user Timur222 first spotted the information after viewing the LinkedIn profile of Matt Welsh, a former global brand manager at Warner Bros. Entertainment.
According to Welsh’s profile, he worked as a global manager for Warner Bros. from 2019 to 2022. He led the team working on the product and marketing campaign for Mortal Kombat 11, Kombat Pack DLCs, and the Aftermath expansion. Welsh also worked on the fighting game MultiVersus which is relaunching in 2024.
Welsh also adds that Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the top 5 titles in 2019 and the game has "generated over $500MM in LTD profit."

Mortal Kombat 11 sold a total of 15 million copies which makes Welsh’s claim entirely plausible. The fighting game also offered two DLCs and microtransactions as an additional revenue stream for the title. The Aftermath expansion also added more revenue for the game.
With the commercial success of Mortal Kombat 11, it is no surprise that Warner Bros. is already working on a follow-up title. Just two months ago, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO announced that Mortal Kombat 12 is coming later this year.
"There's lots more to come including the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League games also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections," Zaslav said.
It will be a big year for the fighting game genre as Mortal Kombat 12 launches alongside Street Fighter 6 and possibly Tekken 8.
NetherRealms is also working on an action-adventure beat 'em-up spinoff for the Mortal Kombat series. The upcoming title Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is launching on mobile platforms in the latter part of 2023.
"We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature," NetherRealms creative director Ed Boon said. "With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy."
Mortal Kombat 12 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
