Why Mortal Kombat 1 might not have cross-play at launch

A since-deleted section of the FAQ for Mortal Kombat 1 implies NetherRealm Studios' upcoming fighting game will be missing a key feature.

Mortal Kombat 1 is going to be shooting itself in the foot if it won't have cross-play at launch.

Cross-play is crucial in games with a multiplayer component. Ever since the undeniable popularity of Fortnite forced all of the big console manufacturers to open their platforms for a synergistic multiplayer gaming experience, a multiplayer game has had the need to have cross-play. But, for some reason, NetherRealm Studios’ next Mortal Kombat game won’t have it.

Mortal Kombat 1, which is a reboot of the decades-old fighting game franchise, could potentially one-up its predecessor, which exceeded half a billion in sales.

Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat 1 has an uphill climb when it hits the store shelves.

According to a since-deleted portion of the Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ page, the game won’t have crossplay at launch.

The famed industry watcher, Wario64, took a screenshot of the alleged part of the Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ page before the studio removed it. In it, NetherRealm confirmed its plans to “add cross-play or cross-progression support post-launch.

You can check out the Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ page yourself and see that the question is no longer there.

Then again, if the full implementation of cross-play for Mortal Kombat 1 at launch isn’t good, then NetherRealm Studios is better off “delaying” it.

We’re assuming NetherRealm removed it to prevent further confusion and so it won’t have to explain anything. Of course, it’s possible NetherRealm initially intended to release cross-play for Mortal Kombat 1 post-launch. Since development is going well, NetherRealm is holding off on any official announcement until it’s sure if Mortal Kombat 1 will or will not have cross-play when it comes out.

To be on the safe side, we should assume Mortal Kombat 1 will have cross-play but not on September 19 (or 14, if you have early access).

Mortal Kombat 1 brings back some of the series’ most popular characters sporting their best graphical looks yet. The first trailer gives audiences a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect.

Make no mistake, the footage isn’t taken from gameplay but it won’t surprise us if the final product in September will look just as polished. As a bonus, the story Mortal Kombat 1 will tell is shaping up to be quite an intriguing one.

NetherRealm has done an excellent job with Mortal Kombat 1 so far and it’s a shame that the lack of cross-play could affect its potential success at launch.

We’ll likely find out more about Mortal Kombat 1 over the next few months, including whether or not the earlier Kombat Pack leak is legit.
