Mortal Kombat is bringing forth a new era this September 19 as NetherRealm Studios has officially confirmed the nitty and gritty about the incoming entry in the franchise just a day after Ed Boon started teasing fans online.
A little over a decade after it rebooted Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm is reinventing the legendary fighting game again with its next chapter. As confirmed by the previous teasers and leaks, Mortal Kombat 1 is a reboot of sorts, which takes place in the New Era timeline. Thus, the story makes Liu Kang's victory and ascension to godhood following the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath canon to the entire story.
Mortal Kombat 1, set for release in September, promises to turn heads and shatter skulls when it comes out.
The Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer reveals the game in its gory glory. NetherRealm wants to one-up the best-selling entry in the series, starting by making things slicker, befitting of a current-gen title. But, surprisingly enough, we're seeing a Nintendo Switch port in development.
The trailer confirms Mortal Kombat 1 will depict every punch, kick, and Fatality in magnificent detail, capturing the heart-pumping if controversial core of the Mortal Kombat series.
After being confirmed earlier this year, the release date of Mortal Kombat 1 adds to the excitement. Many feared Mortal Kombat 1 would follow the way of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which has since been delayed to next year.
NetherRealm threw a curveball with the Mortal Kombat 1 reveal instead. This is a clear intent to revisit and reinvent the classic game rather than merely continue the series. The nostalgia, coupled with the allure of new and improved features, sets the stage for what could easily be one of the biggest games this year.
September is huge for gaming this year.
Aside from Mortal Kombat 1, Starfield, and quite possibly, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, will be coming out in the same month.
We're curious to find out if we'll see more of Mortal Kombat 1 on the May 24 PlayStation Showcase.
