Monster Hunter is one of Capcom’s biggest franchises and its fifth-generation title, Monster Hunter Rise, has been a huge hit so far. In fact, according to the tale of the numbers, Monster Hunter Rise and its expansion, Sunbreak, have combined to sell over 19 million copies.
Monster Hunter Rise came out on the Nintendo Switch and PC in 2021 with ports to the PlayStation and Xbox coming early this year. Capcom recently announced that the base game surpassed 13 million copies sold at the end of June.
Sunbreak, the expansion for Monster Hunter Rise, was also hugely successful for Capcom. The DLC sold over 6 million units since it was released last year for PC and Switch. Sunbreak was only released on consoles on April 28, so we can expect the expansion to sell a bit more toward the end of the year.
Capcom announced the milestone in a tweet last Friday as it thanked the Monster Hunter community for its continued support.
Monster Hunter Rise has now sold over 13 million units, with #Sunbreak achieving more than 6 million units worldwide too!
To our global community, thank you. Your amazing support and passion for Monster Hunter is felt by everyone on the team! ❤️

Just for comparison, Monster Hunter World, the predecessor of Rise, is Capcom’s best-selling game ever with well over 20 million units shipped as of 2021. Iceborne, the expansion of Monster Hunter World, sold 8.5 million units.
Monster Hunter Rise will likely not catch Monster Hunter World in terms of sales numbers but it is still massively successful. The Monster Hunter series as a whole has shipped over 91 million units and is Capcom’s second-best-selling franchise after Resident Evil.
What’s next for Monster Hunter?
Capcom recently released its final update for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak for PC and Switch. The update will come to consoles later in July.
Many fans believe that Capcom is ready to announce its next title and the first for Monster Hunter Generation 6. We expect the next title to come to PC and PlayStation 5 like Monster Hunter World. Fans have already been speculating on which monsters will come in the next title.
We expect Capcom to announce the next Monster Hunter title at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2023. However, the title is not expected to release this year and may be released in late 2024 or early 2025.
While waiting for the announcement of the next Monster Hunter installment, fans can continue to play Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak as in-game event quests will continue to be added until the end of July.
Fans can also check out Monster Hunter Now, an upcoming augmented reality game from Capcom and Pokémon Go creator Niantic. In Monster Hunter Now, players can hunt the most popular monsters from the series similar in real-world locations.
Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak are available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
