Spyro Reignited Trilogy has sold more than 10 million units worldwide

Despite not getting a new entry for god knows how long, Spyro remains one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.

Spyro has easily been one of the most neglected best-selling franchises in recent years.

Activision recently announced that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy has sold more than 10 million units globally, marking a significant milestone for the rebooted series.

Originally launched for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2018, the collection was later ported to Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in September 2019. This news comes as Spyro prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary later this week on September 9, signaling that the little purple dragon still has plenty of fire left.

Developed by Toys for Bob, the trilogy brought new life to the original three Spyro games: Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. These titles were initially released for the PlayStation 1 and quickly gained a cult following, cementing their place in the 5th console generation among the best 3D platformers and collectathons on the market. Interestingly, the studio’s commitment to Spyro was briefly side-tracked when it was reduced to a support studio for Call of Duty in 2021, though it seems to have regained its footing since.

Despite the lack of support, Spyro continues to earn the praise and adoration of fans.

The game’s sales figures might not have eclipsed those of the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane trilogy as quickly, but it’s massive enough to reignite conversations about the franchise’s future. In the gaming community, the sentiment seems to be one of immense value for money, with many comparing Spyro’s success to that of the Crash Bandicoot remake trilogies. Fans have been vocal about their desires for a brand-new Spyro game, especially in light of the success of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. While there’s no concrete evidence suggesting that a new Spyro game is on the horizon, the strong sales of the Reignited Trilogy make the idea more plausible than ever.

However, it’s not just fans who are interested in Spyro’s future. Activision itself has teased something for the series’ 25th anniversary. They’ve advised fans to keep an eye on Spyro’s official social media accounts for upcoming “celebrations,” which could potentially include announcements of new projects or updates.

As for the speculation surrounding what these updates might entail, some think a new-gen version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 60FPS might be on the cards. Others consider the possibility of Spyro making an appearance in Toys for Bob’s more recent release, Crash Team Rumble.

We can only hope that Microsoft can give Toys for Bob a chance to flex its creative muscles with a new Spyro game.

Given that gaming landscape is continuously evolving, some have expressed interest in seeing Spyro extend beyond the PlayStation and Xbox. For instance, many don’t understand why games like Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled haven’t yet arrived on PC, considering there’s a gap in the market for high-quality kart racers outside of Mario Kart. There’s a clear demand for more from the Spyro universe, whether it’s in the form of new games, ports, or even sequels to beloved spin-offs.

Moreover, the change in the ownership landscape adds another layer of intrigue to Spyro’s future. Now that it’s owned by Microsoft, it remains to be seen how the tech giant plans to manage a franchise that has predominantly been a console experience, especially considering Microsoft’s limited recent history with 3D platformers.

Still, as we wait for the fog of speculation to lift, fans are keeping their hopes alive for more than just a celebration of Spyro’s past.

The Spyro franchise may have sold closer to 30 million units by now.

The internet has brought up names such as Ape Escape, Dino Crisis, and Mega Man Legends as potential candidates for remakes, proving the power of nostalgia coupled with modern-day gaming technology can offer an incredibly lucrative proposition. But for now, all eyes are on that little purple dragon as we wait to see if he takes another soaring leap or simply enjoys a well-earned rest.
