Sony looking to invest in PC, mobile gaming, and live services to gain a competitive edge

With that being said, in a recent interview with Reuters, Herman Hulst, the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, confirmed that Sony is looking to expand its investment portfolio on PC, mobile, and live services to gain a competitive edge in the industry. Given the recent success of the PC ports, it won't be a surprise if the company looks into such investments.

"Further investments in areas that will strengthen the expansion on to PC, on to mobile and into live services, that's definitely a possibility for us," Hulst said.

Sony's plans to expand its presence in the PC gaming industry also line up with the recent datamined content suggesting the presence of a PlayStation PC launcher potentially in development for future release.

Hulst didn't reveal many details about Sony's plans for their expansion into the PC and mobile gaming sector. While the PC investments are evident through all the recent triple-A ports, mobile gamers are also getting the hint.

As mentioned earlier, Sony has acquired multiple studios since the launch of its new-gen console. One of the acquired game development studios is Savage Game Studios. Apparently, the studio is tasked with handling PlayStation's mobile gaming sector.

PlayStation also recently patented a potential design for a PlayStation mobile controller. The controller is supposedly going to be designed specifically for mobile users. This further adds to Sony's ongoing plan of branching out into different sectors.

Recent investments made by Sony include its acquisition of Bungie, worth $3.6 billion. Bungie is responsible for one of the most popular PC multiplayer franchises, Destiny. Currently, Bungie is under Sony. Additionally, the Japanese giant has also purchased a minority stake in FromSoftware, the developers responsible for the recent successful action role-playing game Elden Ring.

There was a time when the thought of playing PlayStation-exclusive games on a PC would be scoffed at. However, times have rapidly changed, and the quality games produced by Sony exclusively for its console are no longer safe under the exclusivity umbrella, at least for a year or two after launch.

Given the rate at which Sony is porting its exclusive games over to PC, we can definitely expect to see more in the coming years. Currently, the most anticipated game of all, God of War: Ragnarok, is expected to launch on November 9, 2022. God of War is currently marketed around the PlayStation consoles, but don't be surprised to see it listed on the Steam store in a year or two.
