Video game movies aren't always successful at the global box office, but things have started getting better over the past few years. Most of the highest-grossing video game movies of all time all came out in the past five years. Granted, 2016's live-action adaptation of Blizzard's best-selling franchise, Warcraft, didn't set the highest bar at $439 million, but that's still a lot of money, all things considered.
While Warcraft's spot at the top is likely safe for the foreseeable future, its "elite" group of outliers will be joined by a newcomer.
According to recent estimates, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now pulled in $325 million at the global box office, pushing it past its predecessor, 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, which was sixth all-time after earning nearly $320 million at the global box office. Furthermore, Sonic's second live-action outing is now the most successful video game movie of all time in the United States with many also considering it the best movie adaptation of a video game ever.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 currently holds a 67% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 96% audience score, which is far higher compared to other video game films with similar box office numbers.
