Oscar Isaac gives Metal Gear Solid movie update

The Solid Snake actor claimed that Metal Gear Solid: The Movie is still coming, but it's nowhere near getting started.

With Hideo Kojima and Konami already parting ways, the odds of a new Metal Gear Solid game being released (at least one that's at least on par with the originals) are very low, but we can't say the same for the live-action adaptation, and that's a good thing. Although there has been very little info about the Oscar Isaac-led movie in recent months, the belief is that the project is still going to happen.

The live-action adaptation could give the Metal Gear franchise a second lease on life.

Fast forward to today and the Moon Knight actor had good news to bring to the legions of fans who are waiting for his take on Solid Snake.

Speaking to IGN at a red carpet event for Moon Knight, Isaac shared the filmmakers are "searching like Solid Snake" and "climbing through air ducts" in pursuit of the right story for the film.

The Metal Gear franchise effectively birthed the stealth genre, paving the way for the likes of Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell, the latter of which is getting a remake. After launching in 1987 as Metal Gear, the series soared to new heights in 1998 with the release of Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation. Just like other iconic franchises, Hollywood has long had plans to make a live-action adaptation, which became one step closer to becoming reality in late 2020 with Isaac signing on to play the long-time series protagonist, Solid Snake.

One of the biggest reasons why a live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid has never come close to happening is Konami's reluctance amidst fear that a bad film would affect the sales of the video games. Meanwhile, Kojima, the series creator, wasn't interested in an adaptation. However, Kojima has since left Konami to helm Kojima Productions, a studio that has since become a fan favorite for Death Stranding. With the state of the Metal Gear Solid games in perpetual limbo following Konami's failed attempt to carry on without Kojima's involvement in 2018's Metal Gear Survive, a live-action adaptation can't possibly do any harm to the dormant IP.

Hopefully, the success of the recent string of live-action video game adaptations will help speed things along for the Metal Gear movie.

Ultimately, Isaac's comments are good news. It's nice to know the reason that the movie is taking so long is that the filmmakers want to make a proper adaptation.

In the meantime, fans can follow Oscar Isaac's appearances on both the big screen and the small screen going forward. Isaac is currently set to make his highly anticipated MCU debut on March 30 as Moon Knight.
