Permadeath is coming to Assassin’s Creed Mirage in December

And, oh, Ubisoft will introduce a New Game+ mode to Assassin's Creed Mirage as well, which is actually a rarity.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will get longer and more difficult in December.

The latest Assassin’s Creed title will receive a significant free update next month. This update will introduce two new modes following the base game’s return to the series’ roots. Although if you ask the critics, they don’t have the most positive things to say about Mirage.

Firstly, the New Game+ mode will allow players to revisit the ninth-century Baghdad setting of Mirage with all the skills and tools they have acquired in their initial playthrough. This mode should offer a very much-welcome and refreshed perspective on the game’s narrative and missions, allowing for a deeper exploration of the game’s mechanics and story with an arsenal of unlocked abilities from the outset.

Moreover, the addition of a permadeath mode presents an intriguing twist to the established formula. This optional and interesting mode, which is available across all difficulty levels, introduces a heightened sense of risk and urgency to the gameplay. In permadeath mode, any fatal mistake could result in the permanent loss of the character, thereby ending the current playthrough. This mode is expected to appeal particularly to expert players seeking a more challenging and intense experience. It aligns well with the technical stealth gameplay of Mirage, potentially transforming each mission into a high-stakes operation where every decision and action could have lasting consequences.

The decision to introduce new features reflects Ubisoft’s understanding of its audience’s desires and its commitment to enhancing the longevity and replayability of Mirage. The game, praised for its focused approach and return to the long-forgotten stealth, action-adventure roots of the franchise, had a shorter runtime compared to its predecessors such as the open-world trilogy starting with Assassin’s Creed: Origins and ending with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. These modes are expected to provide players with fresh incentives to dive back into the game and explore alternative strategies and playstyles.

Furthermore, the update’s timing, coming just a couple of months after Mirage’s release, demonstrates changes to the approach by Ubisoft to player feedback and its dedication to maintaining the game’s relevance in a competitive market. The announcement of the update comes at a time when Ubisoft has no plans for DLC or new expansions, making this free update all the more significant for the game’s community.

Despite lacking the gameplay hours of its predecessors, Mirage more than makes up for with quality gameplay.

While some players might have reservations about starting the adventure again, particularly given Mirage and its more contained experience, experimenting with a full arsenal from the beginning is a strong draw. Furthermore, the Black Box-like missions in Mirage offer various paths and methods. Having all the tools and gear available opens up new and creative avenues for accomplishing missions.

The addition of permadeath is a bold move as well. It could potentially transform Assassin’s Creed Mirage into a high-risk, high-reward experience, similar to the highest difficulty levels of older Metal Gear games where being detected will result in a literal “Game Over” screen.

Either way, the new modes are for players who are seeking a longer gameplay experience or something more traditional and hardcore.

It'll be interesting to see if permadeath will become a permanent addition to the Assassin's Creed franchise going forward.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is just the first of many new installments in the series that’s coming soon. It was soon followed by Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR with Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red, which is presumed to have a female protagonist, is coming out soon as is Assassin’s Creed Jade.

Unlike the most recent trilogy, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is not available on Steam.
