Netflix Red Notice full trailer and theatrical details

Red Notice plays on the trope of needing a thief to catch a thief. Films like Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 To Catch a Thief (from the novel by David Dodge), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968 and 1999), Ocean's Eleven (1960 and 2001), and many others are examples that have been very successful with this trope.

We find more details about John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) being an FBI special agent and profiler. He tracks down the second most wanted art thief in the world, Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) to the latter's tropical island getaway. Hartley recruits Booth to capture the current number one art thief, Sarah Bishop aka The Bishop (Gal Gadot) and prevent her from stealing the coveted and priceless Cleopatra's Eggs.

The trailer also explains what the title alludes to. A red notice is issued by Interpol for a major alert in order to inform global law enforcement authorities to the identity of the most wanted criminals. In this case, Sarah Black and Nolan Booth are already on that particular category.

But John Hartley gets framed by Bishop in the course of the film, thus a Red Notice is imposed on him as well. Now, Hartley must team up with Booth to beat Bishop in her own game, and clear his name by expunging the red notice on his record by recovering the artifacts. They also need to do this while being in hot pursuit by the authorities all over the world.

The trailer is more action-packed than the previous teaser trailer, with more character elements. The over-the-top action is also complemented by the comedic elements. At one point, Johnson even parodies a famous scene from Gladiator (2000) before getting rammed by a bull (which also references one of Johnson's nicknames during his WWE wrestling career and body tattoo of The Brahma Bull).

With that said, there may be a little too much revealed in the trailer. Unless there are twists revealed once the full film is released, the audience can quickly predict how the plot will go. The action and character interaction also has a familiar vibe to other films The Rock has appeared in, such as in The Fast and the Furious franchise (particularly the spinoff 2019's Hobbs & Shaw) and Central Intelligence (2016).

Interestingly, this will be the third film collaboration between Johnson and director Rawson Marshall Thurber, with the first two being Central Intelligence and Skyscraper (2018). Johnson has teamed with the two other actors before too, with Gadot in Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and Reynolds (Hobbs & Shaw).

Red Notice is one of the most expensive Netflix film projects to date, with an estimated budget of close to $200 million. In fact, it is rumored that all the three main stars, Johnson, Gadot, and Reynolds, will each receive a payday of no less than a $20 million. In relation to this, Dwayne Johnson himself had this to say about the project (on his Instagram): Our movie, Red Notice (about the world's greatest art thief, an FBI profiler and the world's greatest con man) is the biggest investment Netflix has made thus far. After a slew of successful big projects that star A-list actors such as Extraction (starring Chris Hemsworth), The Old Guard (starring Charlize Theron), Bright (featuring Will Smith), Project Power (starred Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Spenser Confidential (Mark Wahlberg), Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill), and Bird Box (Sandra Bullock), anticipation and expectations for Red Notice's performance are particularly high. Given the controversies that have arisen with exclusive streaming content like unfair compensation and problematic production conditions, the streaming giant's newest and biggest film will have a significant impact for the future of these endeavors.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Red Notice will be released in theaters on November 5, 2021 for a limited time. The film transitions to the Netflix streaming service on November 12, 2021.
