Doom Patrol may be heading for an unavoidable final season, but DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn denied the last episodes would be shelved.

Key Takeaways
  • James Gunn denies shelving Doom Patrol’s final episodes.
  • He assures fans that the episodes are in post-production.
  • Gunn blames the delay on the ongoing writers’ strike.
  • He urges fans to support the strike for a fair deal.

The Doom Patrol TV series has become a modern cult classic among DC Comics fans. Taking a page from the Grant Morrison run on the strangest superheroes in the DC Universe, the television series explored the wild and wacky world of Robotman, Elasti-Woman, Negative Man, Crazy Jane, Cyborg, and the Chief. After airing on the DC Universe service, HBO Max became its home for the second season onwards. However, despite critical and fan acclaim, Doom Patrol season 4 was confirmed to be its last.

Fresh from creating his Threads.net account, James Gunn addressed the question that the last Doom Patrol episodes were being shelved.

People have asked me this a few times this morning. I’m not sure what it refers to (I am neck deep in Superman & Creature Commandos, not focused on day to day TV scheduling) but I can’t imagine a world where completed episodes are not going to be released.

Later, the filmmaker and the chief architect of the upcoming DC Universe multimedia franchise responded with a confirmation that these episodes are not being shelved.

However, as Gunn noted, there is no official word yet as to when these last episodes will be aired.

Actress Michelle Gomez (Laura De Mille aka Madame Rouge) expressed her concern that the last episodes of Doom Patrol might be “binned” on her Instagram post.

Michelle Gomez, who plays Laura De Mille/Madame Rouge in Doom Patrol, shared her concern on her Instagram account about the last episodes of the show being put in storage.

The original Doom Patrol made its first appearance in issue 80 of the anthology comic book My Greatest Adventure back in 1963. Created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney and artist Bruno Premiani, The Doom Patrol was conceptualized as a more eclectic and self-pitying group of super-powered individuals trying to do good. This was a stark difference compared to the paragons of virtue and heroism like the Justice League which featured DC Comics’ biggest stars.

Although other DC Comics creative teams had a hand in the history of the Doom Patrol (such as Paul Kupperberg and Steve Lightle’s Post-Crisis reboot in 1987), it was Grant Morrison’s run that became the foundation of the live action TV series.

It was announced in early January 2023 that the fourth season of Doom Patrol would be its last. But James Gunn clarified this decision preceded his appointment as DC Studios Co-CEO.

Earlier in January when DC Studios revealed its lineup of DC Universe projects, Gunn washed hands of any involvement with the cancellation of both Doom Patrol and Titans shows. According to Gunn, the decisions to end the two live-action series based on the DC Comics super-teams were before he and Peter Safran were given the reins as Co-CEOs of the newly established DC Studios by David Zaslav.

Doom Patrol stars Brendan Fraser (Cliff Steele/Robotman), Diane Guerrero (Crazy Jane), April Bowlby (Rita Farr/Elasti-Woman), Matt Bomer (Larry Trainor/Negative Man), Timothy Dalton (Niles Caulder/The Chief), Joivan Wade (Victor Stone/Cyborg), and Michelle Gomez (Laura De Mille/Madame Rouge).

All episodes of Doom Patrol seasons 1 to 4 that have aired so far are currently available for streaming on Max (formerly HBO Max).
