Cover art for Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition leaked ahead of December release

Re-releasing Cyberpunk 2077 after three years makes sense following the success of the Phantom Liberty expansion.

Cyberpunk 2077 today is no longer the Cyberpunk 2077 you played three years ago. If you got a chance to play it a bit on any platform in late 2020 or for most of the 2021s, we can’t help but feel sorry for you. At the time, Cyberpunk 2077 was far from complete, arguably released prematurely to take advantage of a multi-generational release. Three years later, Cyberpunk 2077 has recovered quite nicely to the point that CD Projekt RED is confident enough that new players will buy a re-release for $60.

CD Projekt RED president and join-CEO, Adam Kiciński, revealed this during an investors conference earlier this month, confirming that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive an updated version similar to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition.

Of course, CDPR isn’t brazen enough to brand the re-release similar to The Witcher 3 given that Cyberpunk 2077 never won such accolades, which explains the name difference.

CDPR confirmed this with IGN but refused to reveal when exactly the Ultimate Edition will hit the storeshelves. However, now the cover art has leaked on the internet (specifically, Reddit), it feels like it’s only a matter of time before it hits the storeshelves.

Based on a different set of earlier leaks, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be available some time in December for $60, which, to be honest, is fairly low price for a bundle that makes a strong case for the game to reevaluated and nominated for a GOTY award.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in 2015, ultimately received 200+ Game of the Year awards and is considered by a lot of gamers, along with The Last of Us Part II, as the two greatest games of all time (well, until Elden Ring eclipsed both). It received two plus-size expansions in October 2015 and May 2016, respectively, before getting a Game of the Year Edition in late 2016, in time for the holiday season. Cyberpunk 2077, while much more hyped ahead of its launch, didn’t receive similar acclaim, but it has since redeemed itself. The release of the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty DLC – Cyberpunk 2077’s lone paid expansion that adds dozens of hours of story content to the base game – was more than enough to solidify Cyberpunk 2077 as one of the best games of the current generation, a year after it started changing minds and getting positive feedback.

Given that Phantom Liberty is exclusive to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC, it’s likely that the Ultimate Edition will only be on the said platforms.

Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are the last games by CDPR to use the company’s proprietary video game engine, REDEngine. The Polish studio is switching to Unreal Engine 5 going forward, starting with The Witcher 4 and the rest of the incoming trilogy. The aforementioned trio takes precedence over Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, which is also in development using Unreal Engine 5.

CDPR is currently working on several projects at the moment, including a remake of the first The Witcher game.
