CD Projekt Red is already looking to its next project after Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.
With the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 coming out later this month, most of the devs will be getting a new assignment.
CDPR is moving a huge chunk of the dev team working on Phantom Liberty to The Witcher 4 after the expansion comes out on September 26. President and CEO Adam Kiciński announced the studio's plan to shift the development team as part of the company's most recent earnings call. The development team for The Witcher 4 codenamed Polaris is already around 250 and an even bigger team is working on Phantom Liberty.
"After releasing Phantom Liberty we'll transfer a big part of the team to Polaris," Kiciński said. "Some remaining members will then focus on supporting other ongoing projects like Orion or Hadar but bear in mind we'll also be supporting Phantom Liberty for some time."
He adds, "And across the company but including Phantom Liberty, we're at the same time parting ways with some team members. It's a gradual process which will end in Q1 next year."
Kiciński clarified that not every developer working on Phantom Liberty will immediately move to Polaris. A part of the dev team will continue to support the Cyberpunk expansion post-launch. We won't know how many devs are working on the next Witcher game until the third quarter financial update on November 28.
CD Projekt Red has a full slate of projects after the launch of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. The studio has already announced that a sequel for Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works, codenamed Orion. CD Projekt Red is also working on a brand new IP codenamed Hadar. Both games are expected to come out in a few years as Polaris and Sirius will be coming out first.
Project Sirius is a new Witcher spin-off title being developed by The Molasses Flood. The development of the upcoming game was shelved for a while but CD Projekt Red recently announced that it is back on track with a "new framework". Sirius is a multiplayer Witcher game that the studio says will appeal to gamers outside of just RPG fans.
During the same earnings call, CD Projekt Red revealed the reason why Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. According to the studio, it will be moving to Unreal Engine 5 with its next projects. The Epic Games developed game engine reportedly makes development easier and faster for larger games.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 26.
