Sony’s latest PlayStation Showcase came two years ago. It’s believed the main reason why Sony refused to hold a massive showcase last year is that it didn’t have much to show off yet. But, now, it appears Sony is itching to have a go.
In a lengthy ResetEra thread, that actually started as a way to pay respects to Lance Reddick, several discussions have taken place regarding what first-party PlayStation games are currently in development.
Then, a certain Shinobi062, a “Verified” user, went ahead and said the following:
To be clear, I don’t know what Sony’s exact plans are when it comes to a showcase or State of Plays and all that. But I know a good amount of teams are at a point where things are certainly ready to be shown. That’s exciting.
This lines up with earlier rumors that a PlayStation Showcase is happening later this month, which may or may not include a third-party title like Mortal Kombat 12, among others.
The truth is that Sony has “settled” for single-game State of Play events so often fans are afraid to set themselves up for another disappointment. The latest dedicated State of Play came last month, where it revealed important details about Final Fantasy XVI ahead of its PS5-exclusive launch on June 5.
Most are expecting another State of Play to happen soon if only to ease concerns about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ahead of its rumored Fall 2023 launch window. But, the more optimistic fans firmly believe that a PlayStation Showcase is coming. And, if we go by what the leaker just said, it might just happen.
At the moment, at least four named first-party PlayStation properties are aiming for a 2024-2025 release, namely:
- Death Stranding 2 (Kojima Productions)
- Marvel’s Wolverine (Insomniac Games)
- Lost Souls Aside (UltiZeroGames)
- The Last of Us Multiplayer Spin-Off (Naughty Dog)
Mind you, this isn’t including the plethora of upcoming PC ports of PlayStation exclusives.
When you consider that Sony has a relatively clear AAA slate for next year and how the company likes to hype its biggest games at least a year ahead of their release, it only makes sense for the PlayStation Showcase to happen sooner rather than later.
Also, don’t forget, we’ll catch wind of Sony’s next financial call within a few months. Sony will likely prefer audiences find out about what it’s working on for the PS5 by way of a big event as opposed to a piece of paper.
Ultimately, until we get official confirmation, it’s best to chalk this info up to pure speculation.
As much as we’d all love to see a PlayStation Showcase be hosted later this month, this isn’t guaranteed yet. But, if it’s any consolation, there are plenty of showcases to look forward to in June, including the three-day showcase by Xbox from June 11-13 as well as the one from Xbox and a Starfield Direct, as well as Summer Game Fest a few days prior on June 8.
