Why is Payday 3 priced at just $40?

Plaion has committed to pay €50 million to assist in the game's development and marketing, including more than 18 months of post-launch support using the games as a service model.

The Xbox Games Showcase had its fair share of highlights, but one of the biggest spotlights came from the gameplay trailer reveal for Payday 3. To everyone’s astonishment, the highly anticipated first-person shooter will carry a modest price tag of only $40.

Fans are buzzing with excitement over this unexpected deal, and the game’s developer has finally shed light on the reasoning behind this bargain that is sure to have gamers flocking to stores upon its release.

Almir Listo, the brilliant mind behind the Overkill Software title, provided some insight into the unbelievable price tag in an interview with ComicBook.com, stating:

The Payday franchise has always been priced fairly ever since Payday: The Heist, which was $20, Payday 2 was $30, and now up to $40 for Payday 3. Reason being we want as many of our community members as possible to get into the actions. We do have a series of different editions available, but the $40 price range, if you look at the game itself we tried to optimize in the best we can to make sure as many machines as possible can run it. When it comes to people’s wallets, we don’t want to rob them. We want to give them an experience they can keep and continue playing. It’s also reflected in the amount of content at launch, if we would’ve had a hundred heists at launch, we would’ve priced it differently. It’s a fair price for a fair amount of content and I do believe based on the feedback I’ve seen online so far that people are kind of happy with it!

In an era where many developers are raising the price of major video game releases from $60 to $70, Overkill Software’s decision has been met with overwhelming praise from gamers. Setting the price at $40 allows players to affordably purchase the game and try it out before deciding to invest further in DLC.

This pricing strategy carries its own risks, but gamers appreciate the transparency and value it offers compared to paying exorbitant amounts for a base game and having to spend even more on DLC to access the full content.

The original crew of characters originating from Payday: The Heist will appear in Payday 3.

Payday 3 will make its debut on September 21, bringing the heist action to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC via Steam. Additionally, the game will feature crossplay and cross-progression across all platforms.
