Warner Bros. Executive Shoots Down Superman Game Talks

According to the executive, Warner Bros. Discovery isn't going to work on a Superman game just because the movie is coming out next year.

It looks like fans will have to continue waiting for a proper Superman game.

Warner Bros. set a new standard in big-budget superhero games in the late 2000s and early 2010s with the release of a new brand of video games, starting with Batman: Arkham Asylum. This eventually spawned a multimedia line of video games and shows, among others. These are collectively known as the “Arkhamverse.” But, in recent years, Warner Bros. hasn’t released a big DC video game hit. On the other hand, Marvel, specifically, Spider-Man, has found success with the help of Insomniac Games. Thus, it’s only fair to wonder if Warner Bros. is feeling the pressure and if it will look to the Big Blue Boy Scout for help in this regard.

A Superman game would make sense with the impending release of Superman: Legacy in 2025: a film that will kick off an interconnected story told through a combination of TV shows and movies, complete with live-action appearances from anyone between Batman (of course) and lesser known characters such as the Creature Commandos, among others. But if you ask JB Perrette, the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO of global streaming and gaming, making a Superman video game is not their priority.

Speaking to Variety, Perrette revealed that Warner Bros. won’t launch a new Superman game out of obligation. Instead, its priority is “to do something that makes sense for the gaming strategy and for fans and for the consumer.”

Since James Gunn took over DC Studios two years, it has eeked out a string of box office failures in a last-ditch attempt to try and recoup some of the costs of creating a failed cinematic universe. With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom now done and over with, fans can finally look forward to the release of Superman: Legacy in 2025, which stars David Corenswet as the titular character.

Although it was previously hinted that the upcoming DC Universe could crossover with video games and vice versa, it appears this isn’t happening anytime soon.

But don’t worry, Warner Bros. still has a couple of comic book video game adaptations confirmed in its release pipeline. The first one is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is scheduled for release on January 30. Afterwards, fans can look forward to an open-world Wonder Woman game by Monolith Productions, the same studio behind Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. Finally, it’s reported that Warner Bros. Montreal is working on a new DC game.
