Wonder Woman is finally getting her dues in video game representation with a solo open-world project. Announced in The Game Awards 2021, the game will be produced by Monolith Productions.

It is interesting that being part of the Trinity of DC Comics superheroes (along with Batman and Superman), Wonder Woman has never received a solo outing before. But with the Amazon Princess enjoying a renaissance as a successful multimedia property after her debut in the DCEU, a video game dedicated to her and her mythos is only appropriate.

What has been revealed so far about the Wonder Woman game? Check out the details below.

Goddess of war?

To be produced by WB Games and developed by Monolith Productions, the Wonder Woman game is described to be a single player open-world action roleplaying game. The game will be using Monolith Productions’ Nemesis System. This is the same game design template that the company used for its Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor title.

Wonder Woman has appeared in video games, but only as part of an ensemble, such as Justice League Heroes (2006, pictured) and Injustice (2013).

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (and its sequel Middle-Earth: Shadow of War) by Monolith Productions are highly popular and critically acclaimed. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor even won the Game of the Year for 2014. Much of this is due to the Nemesis System, which allowed players to build relationships in the game with NPCs, whether they are allies or enemies. Moreover, these NPCs will adjust accordingly, such as enemies becoming stronger when they defeat the player or exploiting weaknesses against large groups of invading armies.

However, the upcoming Wonder Woman game will appear to take it a notch further, as the game will also lead to Wonder Woman becoming a capable leader. This mechanic was introduced in the 2017 sequel Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, which allowed for Followers that could be obtained, recruited, and improved, depending on the player’s choices and actions.

As far as the story goes, there is little revealed so far. The official synopsis reads:

The single player open-world action game will introduce an original story set in the DC Universe and allow players to become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.

It could be surmised that the action will take place in both the mythological settings of Themyscira and the modern trappings when doing missions in the DC Universe proper.

One way that the Wonder Woman game will likely differ from the Middle-Earth games by Monolith Productions is the scale. As impressive as fighting against the hordes of Sauron and Uruk-hai, Wonder Woman would be grander in scale. Diana can shift from epic fights with gods and demons to superhero clashes against her Rogues Gallery such as The Cheetah, Giganta, Doctor Psycho, and Circe. Battles in different time periods would also fit, given Wonder Woman’s thousands of years of experience.

The Wonder Woman game will feature the Nemesis System for interacting with NPCs.

Another point to consider is that this will be set in the DC Universe, which will likely entail interaction with her superhero contemporaries. However, if the Batman-centric games such as Arkham Asylum from Rocksteady Studios or 2022's Gotham Knights from WB Games Montréal are used as the benchmark, the Wonder Woman game will likely focus on her supporting cast such as Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark/Wonder Girl, Fury, and Heracles, to name a few.

When will it arrive in Man’s World?

Thanks to her high-profile success in recent years largely due to her DCEU film appearances portrayed by Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman’s time to shine as a multimedia property has finally arrived.

Interestingly, Monolith Productions has not released a game since Middle-Earth: Shadow of War in 2017. If they have been working on the Wonder Woman game all along, this will be a major game release. However, there is currently no target date of release announced. Given that the marketing and promotion for the Wonder Woman game has only begun with the release of The Game Awards teaser trailer, it is unlikely to be any point prior to early or mid-2023.

However, Wonder Woman will be appearing sooner than that in the video game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which will be arriving on the Sony Playstation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC in 2022.
