Matt Groening's The Simpsons have been on the air since 1989. At this point, the animated Simpsons family is a cultural icon that should probably remain on the air forever, if only just because. Multiple generations of children have grown up watching Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, as well as the rest of the cast, make light of everyday issues, satirize ongoing conflicts, and even predict the future.

However, while the series, which is now in its 33rd season, has been successful as a scripted show, The Simpsons' cinematic debut way back in 2007 wasn't half-bad.

The Simpsons Movie premiered in 2007 and featured the same old cast in a movie that cost $75 million to produce. By the end of its theatrical run, The Simpsons Movie had amassed more than $500 million at the global box office, prompting audiences to ask for a sequel.

Unfortunately, while The Simpsons Movie 2 was confirmed back in 2018, the lack of official news about a second film suggested that it was probably canned. But, according to Al Jean, the executive producer and showrunner of The Simpsons, The Simpsons Movie 2 is still very much in development.

When is The Simpsons Movie 2 going to release?
