The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is now the best Sonic game ever

It's ironic that one of the best-reviewed Steam games ever and the top Sonic title on the platform is an April Fool's joke.

Don't worry, Sonic is still very much alive.

The best days of the blue blur may have already come and passed, but that doesn’t mean SEGA can’t surprise us every now and then. Case in point, following the success of their Sonic the Hedgehog live-action films, SEGA went ahead and gave us the best Sonic game of all time. And, no, we’re not talking about the recent Sonic Frontiers update.

Just in case you missed it, SEGA dropped an April Fool’s prank on Steam on, well, April 1. But, what was supposed to be a joke turned out to be one of the best things to ever happen to Sonic.

As of the moment, over 11,000 users have left reviews on The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, giving it an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating with close to zero negative reviews. In fact, the game isn’t just the best-rated Sonic game on Steam – it’s one of the best-rated Steam games. Period.

As per SteamDB and Steam250, it’s either the 58th-best game on Steam or the 98th-best, respectively. Either way, it’s rated better than Elden Ring, which is the most GOTY’ed of all time.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a sign that passion projects work if done correctly.

While games don’t win awards for topping the Steam charts, it is indicative that SEGA did something right.

According to the Japanese video game company, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a small project spearheaded by the blue blur’s social media, specifically, the current social media manager, Katie Chrzanows.

Thus, this goes to show that the best things in life can come out of the most unexpected of places.

Speaking of Sonic, Sonic Origins Plus is coming out on June 23. Finally, a third Sonic the Hedgehog film is confirmed for December 20, 2024.
