SEGA officially announces release date for Sonic Origins Plus

The physical edition of Sonic Origins Plus will include all of the previously released DLC, a reversible cover, and a 20-page art book.

Sega's announcement of Sonic Origins Plus finally put an end to the speculation surrounding the details of the upcoming Sonic title.

Sonic Origins Plus will be an expanded version of Sonic Origins, featuring additional playable characters and Sonic games from Game Gear. This new version will be released on June 23 in celebration of Sonic's birthday.

Here is the full announcement:

Sonic Origins Plus will be available as an all-in-one bundle in both digital and premium physical editions that include the Sonic Origins base game and the Plus Expansion Pack, featuring 12 Sonic Game Gear titles, playable Knuckles in Sonic CD, and for the first time ever, Amy Rose as a playable character in Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD!

This pack also includes previously released add-on content: Extreme Missions, Mirror Mode, new character animations, and additional backgrounds and music. The premium physical edition will also include a 20-page artbook and a reversible coversheet that pays homage to the classic 1990s era of Sonic.

For current owners of Sonic Origins, the Plus Expansion Pack is an easy way to grab all the new content being added for Sonic Origins Plus. With more content than ever before, this is the definitive way to play these classic games!

The Game Gear was a fourth-generation handheld game console released by Sega to compete with Nintendo's Game Boy.

The inclusion of all 12 classic Sonic games from Game Gear is sure to excite Sonic enthusiasts. These include:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)
  • Sonic Chaos (1993)
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine (1993)
  • Sonic Drift (1994)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball (1994)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble (1994)
  • Sonic Drift 2 (1995)
  • Tails’ Skypatrol (1995)
  • Tails of Adventure (1995)
  • Sonic Labyrinth (1995)
  • Sonic Blast (1996)

There will be three distinct versions of the game collection: Sonic Origins Plus Physical Edition, Sonic Origins Plus Digital Edition, and Sonic Origins Plus Expansion Pack. The first two versions will have a price tag of $39.99, while the third version, which is a digital upgrade for existing Sonic Origins owners, will be available for $9.99.

Sonic Origins was launched on June 23 of last year, which marked the 31st anniversary of the Sonic franchise. The collection includes remastered versions of the first four games in the Sonic series: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.

The game was distributed solely as a digital version for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Speaking of Sonic, fans can check out Sonic Prime on Netflix. Finally, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is coming out on December 20, 2024.
