At this point, it almost seems like Warner Bros. Games is just trying to outdo itself with each successive trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 it reveals in all its bloody glory. If you don’t have a clue about what we’re prattling on about, then you’re in for a big surprise.
In the most recent Mortal Kombat 1 teaser titled “Official Rulers of Outworld,” we get to see some of the fresh characters being introduced to the game’s roster and a new angle to the storyline that has now been rebooted by NetherRealm Studios.
Remember Shao Khan the Conqueror? Of course, no one can forget one of the most memorable antagonists in the Mortal Kombat universe. This iconic figure, once Emperor of Outworld, now finds himself woven into a different narrative thread as he takes on the role of General Shao, a distinguished warrior within the ranks of the Outworld army.
Unsurprisingly, he’s itching to wage war on Earthrealm, and Sindel (whose character design is spectacular) is not having any of it. As the reigning monarch of Edenia and the mother of Princess Kitana, she wants to keep the peace and uphold the legacy of her departed husband through the Mortal Kombat tournament.
At this stage, Liu Kang reveals the identity of Earthrealm’s champion as none other than Raiden. Though he might be a cabbage-farming monk in the upcoming game, Raiden’s mastery of martial arts and his control over deadly lightning powers make it abundantly clear that he’s more than capable of dishing out some serious punishment, even against the most formidable adversaries of Earthrealm.
For those who have been devoted fans of the franchise, the return of Mortal Kombat 3’s sub-boss, Motaro, and the protagonist of Konquest Mode in Mortal Kombat: Deception, Shujinko, is bound to ignite waves of excitement. The Centaurian warrior and the martial arts master are set to make their return as Kameo Fighters.
However, the trailer truly hits its peak towards the conclusion, offering us a glimpse into Sindel’s utterly gruesome fatality. While we’ve already witnessed some remarkably impressive fatalities, such as Liu Kang’s mind-bending black hole fatality and Johnny Cage’s contemporary finisher, it’s safe to say that Sindel’s ruthless deathblow takes fatalities to a whole new level.
NetherRealm Studios caught us off guard when it announced that the franchise would be rebooted again, and while there were some critics among us, they were swiftly silenced when the official trailer was revealed. The game, which will support cross-play and cross-progression, is set to launch on September 19 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
