Squid Game creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is finally talking about Squid Game again.
After confirming that Squid Game is returning in January and teasing updates in March, we finally have more info about when Squid Game will finally come back. The only problem? It is not necessarily good news.
According to Vanity Fair, the survival drama TV series’ creator predicted that Season 2 won’t hit Netflix until late 2023 if not 2024. Vanity Fair adds that the director “only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to run into a script,” and that the next season will have “more games.”
Squid Game is easily the most successful Netflix show, outing Bridgerton by a mile. Not to mention, the series didn’t cost Netflix as much as you would expect it either, making it an economical investment for the now-struggling streamer. Although it would have been nice to see Season 2 of Squid Game arrive earlier, 2-3 years isn’t that long of a time.
Don’t forget, Hwang spent a decade trying to get Squid Game made and lost several teeth during the first season’s production. Hwang more than deserves to keep his teeth this time around.
Jokes aside, we’re hoping that Netflix (and Hwang) is open to expanding on Squid Game.
While we’re well aware of Netflix’s current financial troubles, the world’s leading streaming service still has a reputation to uphold. Case in point, Netflix released an animated movie set in The Witcher universe while audiences waited for The Witcher Season 2. Meanwhile, The Witcher: Blood Origin should launch before the next season of The Witcher, which is currently filming.
If Netflix will continue its penchant for spin-offs and expansions, we’re hoping that Squid Game is next.
In the meantime, Netflix subscribers can look forward to watching the latest seasons of Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, and Love, Death + Robots, as well as the debut of Resident Evil, in the next few months.
