The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf teaser revealed

The new teaser unveils the voice cast of the upcoming Witcher anime hitting Netflix, along with a first look at a young Vesemir.

Coming this August is a new look into the ever expanding Witcher universe with Nightmare of the Wolf, a prequel anime movie hitting Netflix. Focusing on a young Vesemir, Nightmare of the Wolf will tell a new story set before the events revolving around Geralt of Rivia that are explored in the books, games and live-action series.

The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf Teaser Revealed

Nightmare of the Wolf shares the universe of the live-action Netflix series that adapts the original Witcher books penned by Andrzej Sapkowski, as opposed to the popular games developed by CD Projekt Red. Fleshing out the backstory of Vesemir in his younger years, Nightmare of the Wolf seems to hit all the usual Witcher story beats based on the teaser trailer.

We've got monsters, monster slaying, potions, contracts that are more than meets the eye, discrimination against Witchers - the whole package deal. It isn't clear what the exact plotline of Nightmare of the Wolf will be, but we are talking about one movie here, not a series.

The voice cast of the main characters has also been revealed by Netflix alongside the teaser trailer. Theo James voices the leading Witcher, Vesemir. He is joined by Lara Pulver as Tetra, Graham McTavish as Deglan (not Declan) and Mary McDonnell as Lady Zerbst. Han Kwang II is directing with Studio Mir behind the production.

The second season of the live action Witcher show arrives later this year and will feature the debut of Vesemir, with connections between it and Nightmare of the Wolf expected by fans. The other characters in Nightmare of the Wolf are new and created specifically for the film, not having appeared in previous Witcher media.

Netflix is ramping up the output of its Witcher content - it seems the partnership has paid off for the streaming service. Alongside the second season of the main live action series and this anime movie, another live action prequel series is in the works.

Blood Origin will depict the Conjunction of the Spheres, the in-universe event which dumped the human species as well as all the various types of monsters into the realm of elves and dwarves, which is the main Witcher universe. Blood Origin cast Michelle Yeoh as an elven swordswoman and the show will also reveal the creation of the very first Witcher.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf airs on Netflix on the 23rd of August, 2021.
