Sony’s PlayStation 5 console has set another record. The flagship console launched in 2020 and, according to a new report, has sold way more units in the United States during its 29 months of existence than the PlayStation 4 sold during the same period.
This report is courtesy of market research firm Circana, with its president, Mat Piscatella, sharing the news on social media.
In a tweet posted to his Twitter account, Piscatella stated that the PlayStation 5 console had the most sales of any hardware platform in March. In his words, “Growth in PlayStation 5 hardware spending once again drove the March hardware gains. PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in units and dollars for both March as well as 2023 year-to-date.

This latest milestone comes after a recent report that the PlayStation 5 outsold the Nintendo Switch in Japan, which is a big deal even if it only happened for a week. PlayStation 5’s recent performance is impressive given the hardware’s production has been plagued with supply issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the global semiconductor shortage. However, the console’s struggles seem far behind it now with Sony President Jim Ryan stating in December that the hardware’s supply issues have been resolved.
Given that the console had sold over 30 million units as of last December, despite the shortages, its current run looks set to make it one of the best-selling PlayStation consoles ever. Before it was discontinued, the PlayStation 4 was the second best-selling PlayStation console with over 117 million units sold. With PlayStation 5 sales currently outpacing it over the same period in its lifespan, the last-gen console seems poised to, at the very least, take over the PlayStation 4 console’s spot on the all-time best-selling PlayStation consoles list.
In other news, Sony and basketball star Lebron James are collaborating on a themed PlayStation 5 console. The unit will be released later this year and interested gamers will be able to order it directly from the company’s website. Also, it looks like Sony’s opposition to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is bringing some unwanted repercussions. Recently, a US Senator expressed concerns over the entertainment behemoth’s alleged anti-competitive practices and requested that it reveals the exclusive distribution rights for its PlayStation console.
