We have been hearing a lot about Deadpool 3 even as the Hollywood strikes are still in effect. While filming has been halted, its director has provided very promising updates about the upcoming movie, including the hotly anticipated character dynamic between the lead super heroes.

There have been several casting rumors for the movie in recent months ranging from Daredevil to Professor X. However, the main draw of the movie isn’t its long list of featured characters but the real world and movie chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.  The pair worked together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and have since had frequent and humorous exchanges on social media.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy touched on the onscreen chemistry between the two stars of the movie. According to Levy, filming Deadpool 3 was “a joy every day.” He also mentioned that the chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman was “everything the production team had hoped for.

Switching gears now to Deadpool 3: What is happening?” Levy said. “Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swaths of it, we are paused. We were halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day, and that chemistry is, I have to say — spoiler alert — it is as relentlessly awesome as we had all hoped it would be.

He adds, “But, we are halfway through filming. We shut down. Our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts our industry, and certainly inclusive of our movie, back at work.”

It is interesting to hear that the onscreen chemistry between the two actors is amazing given that they were not allowed to do improvisations during filming given that writers were on strike. The banter between Reynolds and Jackman on social media has been mostly quips about their characters and roles. We imagine it would be a ton more fun if the duo were free to goof around as they do in real life.

Aside from the chemistry between Deadpool and Wolverine, Levi also mentioned that the movie will be R-rated like the previous two installments. The upcoming sequel is sticking to the formula that made its forerunners successful, despite now being released under the family-friendly Disney label.

“Deadpool 1 is, to me, a perfect movie, and so I was not going to mess with the DNA of that franchise,” Levy shared. “Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated. We went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments. The internet has proven that by revealing pictures of our shoot. Thank you, internet!”

The director continued, “But we wanted something that felt grounded [and] real, but you put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character… I would say it’s more a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles than it is a descendant of Airplane!.”

As a result of the on-going strikes, Deadpool 3 does not have a release date yet.
