Resident Evil 9 is reportedly coming in 2025

Can we be absolutely sure that Ethan Winters actually died in Resident Evil Village, considering his ridiculous regenerative ability?

Switch players might still be knee-deep in Resident Evil Village, but for PlayStation and Xbox owners, two years have already elapsed since the game was released, and now they’re ready for the next installment in the unrivaled survival horror franchise. Fortunately, a new report suggests that it won’t be long before Resident Evil 9 makes its much-awaited debut.

According to the trustworthy Resident Evil Leaker Dusk Golem, Capcom is hard at work on Resident Evil 9 and is planning to announce the game next year, ahead of its expected 2025 release. Dusk Golem further claims to have the inside scoop on all the major Resident Evil titles planned by Capcom until 2029, but unfortunately, no further details were shared.

This isn’t the first time Dusk Golem has shared information about Resident Evil 9. In 2021, the RE leaker disclosed that RE9 has strong connections to both RE7 and Resident Evil Village, stating:

I guess to summarize the last few tweets simply & non-spoilery, know that Village being a direct sequel to RE7 was decided pretty early on, there’s some things put in RE7 that will make more sense after RE8. More than any other series of titles in the series history, RE7>RE8>RE9 have a connected, planned out story as all ended up in dev close together.

I also suspect this is why they want to move past numbered titles after RE9, to tell more self-contained stories rather than have to plan out stories ahead of time, but its cool here.

When we reflect on the ending of Resident Evil Village, the idea of RE7, RE8, and RE9 being a trilogy makes sense. After defeating Mother Miranda, Ethan Winters heroically sacrifices himself, obliterating the fungus root and ensuring Miranda’s death.

With his daughter Rosemary saved, the end credits unveil a grown-up version of Rosemary visiting her father’s grave, which is followed by a title card that reads, “The Father’s Story is Done.”, inviting speculation about “The Daughter’s Story”, if any.

Capcom has decided to make use of fan surveys to decide on the next Resident Evil remake.

In light of this, it strongly indicates that RE9 will center around Rosemary. Being the daughter of mutant parents Ethan and Mia, Rosemary possesses a body composed entirely of Mold, which replicates human DNA. This grants her the same regenerative powers as her father, making her an ideal protagonist for the upcoming Resident Evil installment.

On the flip side, Capcom might decide to focus on Chris Redfield’s story and his involvement with the BSAA, while Rosemary’s story is told in parallel. This wouldn’t be the first time a mainline Resident Evil title tried following multiple protagonists and storylines concurrently, though the last time that didn’t work out too well.

Dusk Golem additionally teased that Capcom is set to unveil a big game by the end of this year, with a planned release in fall 2024. The specific title is still a mystery, but fans are crossing their fingers for either a Monster Hunter: World sequel or a Dead Rising sequel (or even a remake).

The long-awaited Devil May Cry 6 would be an incredible surprise too, but it’s a tough ask since the game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno, is currently tied up with Capcom’s other project, Dragon’s Dogma 2also a hotly awaited sequel. Notice a pattern?

Devil May Cry 5 is the best-selling game in the DMC franchise.

We will keep you updated as further information about Resident Evil 9 becomes available, but in the meantime, Resident Evil fans can look forward to the release of Resident Evil: Death Island on Blu-ray and digital download on July 25.
