Rain and Reptile might be confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1

While the confirmed roster already boasts well-loved figures like Kitana, Kenshi, Scorpion, Mileena, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, and others, it's the potential return of Reptile and Rain that's got the fans talking. The source of the said rumors? Cryptic tweets from Ed Boon, the creative director, and Cory Taylor, the community manager for Warner Bros. Games.

Boon dropped a tantalizing hint on Twitter, @noobde, stating: "…the phone rings. It's Vicky calling…" This statement quickly turned into a potential clue for Rain. Fans of Prince, the late music icon, would recognize "Vicki Waiting" as one of his iconic songs, and that connection could be the secret key. Rain, the character, was created as a nod to Prince – from a name that's an homage to the hit song "Purple Rain," to his color scheme echoing Prince's fondness for purple. The fact that this tweet preceded the announcement of a Kombat Kast and character reveal only served to fuel speculation.

On the other side of the coin, Cory Taylor, @ThalionFTW, responded to a Mortal Kombat 1 tweet saying: "…and it's gonna melt faces.

Given the context – a reply to Boon's tweet about a gameplay trailer with MAIN & KAMEO fighter reveals – it makes a lot of sense for fans to latch onto this statement as a hint towards Reptile's return. Known for his acid-spit ability, which can melt faces quite literally, Reptile's re-entry into the Mortal Kombat universe seems a logical step.

However, while these tweets point towards the potential returns of Rain and Reptile, Boon is known for teasing and trolling his audience on Twitter, often regarding high-demand characters. His references could potentially be false leads, leading fans down a path of wishful thinking. On the other hand, a recent Mortal Kombat 1 roster leak did hint at Reptile being a part of the game's lineup, lending some credibility to the speculation.

When it comes to Rain, his history in the Mortal Kombat series has been a bit of a rollercoaster. First brought back as a DLC fighter in Mortal Kombat 9, Rain was present in Mortal Kombat X but wasn't playable. His return in Mortal Kombat 11 was once again as a post-launch DLC character. So, will Rain finally take his place on the main roster in Mortal Kombat 1, or will he remain a Kameo fighter, always on the periphery? Only time will tell.

Whether or not Reptile and Rain will feature in the main game, their potential inclusion in future DLC packs remains a hopeful possibility for fans.

However, a trusted leak from last month didn't include Rain in its list of "confirmed" characters for Mortal Kombat 1. So, either the insider was wrong or Ed Boon decided to make some last-minute changes.
