It’s time to turn your phones into real Pokédexes. The Pokémon Company dropped a big announcement on the new Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, a digital adaptation of the iconic and still hyper-popular Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), set to launch on both Android and iOS platforms later this year.

Since the 1990s, the Pokémon TCG has been one of the most enduring IPs in the collectible card game (CCG) industry, along with Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! With decades of sets and expansions, new fans can find getting into the hobby a bit daunting.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket promises to be a simpler entry point and redefine the way players collect and interact with their favorite Pokémon cards. Mainly, it will be doing away with the classic medium of actual, physical paper.

Upon launch, players can dive into this new TCG based on the Pokémon franchise by battling, collecting, and trading Pokémon cards through the mobile app. The experience of opening booster packs has been enhanced with interactive animations, allowing users to swipe their fingers to cut through virtual plastic wrap in an attempt to emulate the physical version of the activity.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket players will get 2 free virtual booster packs daily, which can be opened by swiping on the screen. This is intended to emulate the experience of opening physical Pokémon TCG for that dopamine hit of getting a rare or shiny card.

A key highlight of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is the introduction of “immersive cards.” These special cards provide players with the opportunity to explore an expanded scene of the printed illustration, offering a deeper connection to the artwork.

As stated in the official press release, these immersive cards allow players to “leap into the world of the card’s illustration,” providing a novel way to appreciate the cards a player receives in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Basically, PTCGP is blending a gatcha with an ARG.

The game’s development has been a collaborative effort, bringing together Creatures Inc., the creators of the Pokémon TCG, and DeNA Co. Ltd., known for their involvement in the development of Pokémon Masters EX. This team-up has resulted in a mobile gaming experience that combines the nostalgia of the classic Pokémon TCG with current technology and visual effects.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket cards will have variant designs, similar to Marvel Snap. The card abilities remain the same as the basic version, but the artwork and special visual effects will be different for each variant.

In Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, players will be able to open two booster packs daily at no cost, featuring both nostalgic illustrations from the long history of the Pokémon franchise and new cards exclusive to the app. The streamlined rules are based on the classic Pokémon TCG battle system, promising quick and engaging battles for players of all levels.

Although specific details about these streamlined rules were not disclosed, the gameplay showcased in the announcement video suggests a dynamic and accessible system, drawing parallels to the widely acclaimed Marvel Snap.

This strategic card game gained popularity on Android and iOS (and later a PC version) for its fast-paced battles, reminiscent of Hearthstone, but with a unique and easy to learn set of mechanics with the tic-tac-toe placements, card abilities, and the wild card effects of locations.

While the release date for Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket remains undisclosed, it has been confirmed that the game is set to follow a “free-to-start” model on both Android and iOS devices, providing an easy entry for new and old fans to engage with the Pokémon TCG Pocket app without shelling out cash – at first.

Given the Marvel Snap approach Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is taking, one cannot help but wonder how this will affect other digital collectible card games. Moreover, how will the Pokémon community embrace this new, streamlined version of the beloved trading card game? Will it be as successful as Marvel Snap?
