Payday 3 gameplay trailer steals the show at the Xbox Games Showcase

The co-op FPS franchise is finally coming back and its release date is a lot sooner than most of us expected.

Roughly a decade later, the OG crew are banding together again to deliver yet another series of memorable heists.

Payday 3 might as well have told everyone to put their hands up in the air and give it all the cares they have in the world as that’s definitely how it felt like when it dropped by at the Xbox Games Showcase.

Amidst the crowd of promising titles, Payday 3, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular co-op FPS franchise by Overkill Software, took the spotlight. It definitely appears that our appetite for chaotic shootouts and adrenaline-pumping heists is going to be well-satiated later this year once the game comes out on September 21.

The Payday series, boasting over eight million players on Steam for Payday 2 alone, has earned its reputation by delivering heart-racing co-op action centered around heist scenarios. The release date of the third installment was leaked earlier, but the Xbox Showcase allowed fans a well-deserved official announcement along with a glimpse of the gameplay.

There was no shortage of cinematic allure intertwined with the showcased gameplay after the initial teaser from earlier this year. A chaotic frenzy of heists, weapons galore, and good old havoc is the order of the day.

Payday 3 seems to have inherited the classic touch from its predecessors, courtesy of Overkill Software. But it’s not just the old that the game is banking on; a mysterious ‘unknown threat’ centering around New York City promises a fresh narrative.

The infamous Payday Gang is back in action, stepping out of retirement to take on this new threat.

Here’s the official synopsis of the game:

Thanks to years of experience and a mysterious new player in the criminal underworld, they quickly get their hands on the first lucrative heists and leave their explosive calling card with the city’s security and police forces.

Payday’s evolution over the years have been nothing short of phenomenal and we’re expecting Payday 3 to continue the series’ forward trajectory.

It’s impossible to ignore the evolution of the franchise, exemplified by the introduction of new skills, gadgets, and weapons. These enhancements are set to provide players with choices in their approach to heists, thereby affecting the course of all the heists. A reflection of our digital age, the game also touches upon contemporary issues such as cryptocurrencies, mass surveillance, and the dark web.

The release date announcement also confirmed that the game would be available on the Xbox Game Pass from day one. Payday 3, while primarily released on Xbox Series X/S, will also be available for PC and PlayStation 5 players.

The excitement around Payday 3 is immeasurable, and why wouldn’t it be? The game is set to deliver the series’ trademark action-packed co-op FPS gameplay while introducing a refreshing narrative. The ten-year wait since Payday 2 is coming to an end, and the trailer promises that it might just be worth it.

Payday 3 might end up being one of the few “live-service” co-op shooters that end up succeeding in a world where most are canceled before they get a chance to get off the ground.

While the short glimpses of new features haven’t provided the full picture, fans can eagerly wait for more updates in the coming weeks. For now, Payday 3 promises a reunion with the original Payday crew, new adventures in the crime-riddled streets of New York City, and the exhilaration of orchestrating the perfect heist.

To top it all off, a live-action TV show or film adaptation based on the Payday franchise is coming.
