NetherRealm Studios confirms Reptile for Mortal Kombat 1 at EVO 2023

After being absent from Mortal Kombat 11, one of gaming's first hidden characters, will rejoin the roster alongside Ashrah and Havik.

We're not going to lie, the reboot version of Reptile is a lot cooler than the original.

Taking advantage of the electrifying atmosphere of EVO 2023, the largest fighting game tournament in the world, as its backdrop NetherRealm Studios unleashed a thrilling spectacle that left fans in awe.

Reptile, Havik, and Ashrah have been officially added to the already stellar roster of Mortal Kombat 1, with Sareena also stepping into the shoes of a new Kameo character.

For a franchise that has spanned over three decades, introducing icons like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, this announcement was an affirmation of the game’s legacy and its commitment to innovative storytelling.

Reptile, fondly known as Syzoth to many, isn’t new to the Mortal Kombat series, having made his debut in the original game as a hidden character, marking the beginning of a 30-year tradition of Easter eggs. Yet, his return promises a fresh angle. He’s not just another lizard-themed character – Reptile embodies duality. With the ability to shapeshift from his natural Saurian form to a human visage mid-battle, players can exploit the strengths of both his identities. His unique acid-spewing and tongue-whipping abilities have always been a crowd favorite, capturing the imagination of many as they pit him against formidable adversaries.

Similarly, Havik, the anarchist Cleric of Chaos from the Chaosrealm, and Ashrah, the demon from the Netherrealm who’s searching for redemption, are both intriguing characters, each with their distinct battle styles. Havik, a masochist who uses his own limbs as weapons, guarantees an  unforgettable blood-soaked visual spectacle.

Ashrah’s journey from the depths of the Netherrealm, where she emerged as a demon, to her quest for salvation is an iintriguing tale. Her near-human appearance, a result of shedding her innate malevolence, is a testament to the game’s dedication to detailed character development and intricate lore.

Mortal Kombat 1’s cast is arguably more interesting than its most recent predecessors.

Though both Ashrah and Havik first appeared in Mortal Kombat: Deception, their reintroduction to this reimagined timeline carries a fresh sense of excitement.

Sareena introduces a different dynamic to the game as the latest Kameo Fighter. Originating from the 1997 title, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, she has evolved from her initial appearance to embrace her fierce demonic form. Kameo Fighters, for those uninitiated, are characters that bolster your fighting capabilities, but aren’t directly controlled by the player. It adds an additional layer of strategy and unpredictability to every duel.

Yet, these are just the tip of the iceberg. NetherRealm has teased other combatants like Sektor, Cyrax, and Frost, not to mention the entry of crossover DLC characters such as Homelander, Peacemaker, and Omni-Man. The Mortal Kombat universe, known for its complex narratives and unforgettable characters like Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, and Kitana, is expanding and we can’t wait to find out where else the studio is taking it.

We’re expecting to hear more about the Mortal Kombat 1 roster in the coming weeks.

This enthralling new trailer, showcased at EVO 2023, wasn’t a mere glimpse into the game’s mechanics, but a cinematic experience. It hinted at narrative arcs, character motivations, and of course, an array of fatalities, all meticulously crafted to retain the essence of the franchise while pushing the boundaries of modern gaming technology. The rapturous applause from the live audience in Las Vegas was a testament to the impact of this reveal.

Scheduled to release on September 19, across various platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, with early access for the select few, Mortal Kombat 1 promises to be more than just a game. It’s a nod to its illustrious past, a celebration of its vibrant present, and a hopeful gaze into the future.

As the clock ticks closer to the release date, one thing is certain – Mortal Kombat 1 continues to get more exciting.
