Mortal Kombat is going back to the beginning of the timeline. This is what at least two reliable leakers have been saying in the past few days after NetherRealm Studios teased something related to a reboot. But, while this is the first most of us are hearing of this news, internet sleuths point out the possibility that an insider might have let us in on this a while back.

As pointed out by u/Youngstown_Mafia on Reddit, an older leak is pretty much spot on about the next Mortal Kombat title, including the fact that it's a reboot that takes place in the past. However, the leak clarifies that the story isn't a retelling but will thread new ground, telling a "unique story that has yet to be told in the MK games."

Aside from story details, the leak claims that the base roster will have 29 characters but with a "generous" amount of DLC characters post-launch.

Finally, aside from familiar faces, Mortal Kombat Origin will reportedly reintroduce "long forgotten characters" such as Kai, Reikko, Li Mei, and Shujinko. It will also add new characters like the Great Kung Lao as well as Tython and Sojo, which are the "sub-boss" and "main boss", respectively.
