It’s official – Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has gone gold

Going gold means that there's no way that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 won't be available on the PlayStation 5 on october 20.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may end up surprising the hell out of everyone by how much better it is than its predecessors.

Insomniac Games, in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games, has announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has officially gone gold. This milestone signifies that the game has completed its final development phase and is primed for its much-anticipated release on October 20.

It’s safe to say that fans can finally mark their calendars for what’s promising to be yet another standout title in a year full of them.

For those less acquainted with gaming jargon, when a game “goes gold”, it has finished its primary development cycle. The game is essentially complete, poised for mass production, and ready to be shipped globally. This doesn’t necessarily mean the developers’ work is done, as there will likely be further updates and bug fixes leading up to and following the release. However, the core game, the version players will delve into come October 20, is set.

It’s a shame that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Sony’s Kraven the Hunter live-action film aren’t coming out together or close to each other.

In a jubilant reveal on their official X account, Insomniac Games posted a celebratory video, with Nadji Jeter (who voices Miles Morales), Yuri Lowenthal (the voice behind Peter Parker), Laura Bailey (portraying Mary Jane Watson), and Tony Todd (the ominous voice of Venom) all coming together to express their collective enthusiasm for the project to be in its final stages.

In closing the video, Insomniac made one thing clear: it can’t wait for fans to enjoy what it has been “cooking up” next month.

The upcoming release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is particularly noteworthy given the game’s lineage. It’s a sequel to the 2018 sensation Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4. This iteration promises a fresh cast of iconic villains, such as Kraven, Venom, and potentially Mysterio. Gameplay mechanics have seen enhancements, and with Miles Morales, who had his own spin-off game in 2020, taking on a more central role, the narrative promises to be richer. A core storyline revolves around Peter Parker grappling with the challenges of a parasitic symbiote that seizes control of him, fundamentally altering his character.

It appears the sequel will also test the relationship between Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

Adding to the excitement, Insomniac showcased a new gameplay trailer at the most recent State of Play livestream as it tantalized fans by confirming that over 65 novel Spider-Man suits, each inspired by comics and movies, are coming to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The extended New York City map promises an immersive gaming environment, with novel activities and storylines. The teasers hint at additional adversaries appearing alongside Venom and Kraven the Hunter as well.

The game’s Digital Deluxe Edition will treat players with ten additional Spider-suits. Peter Parker gets adorned with the 25th Century Suit, Apunkalyptic Suit, Tactical Suit, Aurantia Suit, and the Stone Monkey Suit. Miles, not to be outdone, will have access to the Tokusatsu Suit, Encoded Suit, Agimat Suit, Red Spectre Suit, and the futuristic Biomechanical Suit.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may also set up Miles Morales as the future solo protagonist of the series.

Recent updates have also offered insights into gameplay dynamics. Players have learned of a fall damage feature which can be toggled on or off, ensuring those high-flying acrobatics don’t end in unexpected tragedy. An intriguing detail in the sequel is the simultaneous on-screen presence of both Spider-Men. While players navigate the city as Peter, for instance, Miles can be seen swinging and somersaulting in tandem. It might not be co-op, but it’s a charming addition to the game’s mechanics.

In a year already replete with blockbuster video game releases, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 promises to be an adventure not unlike any other.

Given the recent announcement, fans can rest easy knowing that the wait won’t be extended. Come October 20, they’ll web-swing through the streets of New York once again.
