Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are the reigning box office champs with the success of Barbie. The duo is set to reunite for another project, this time as master thieves in an Ocean’s 11 prequel.
In an interview with Games Radar, producer Josey McNamara shares his excitement about Robbie and Gosling’s reunion. While the producer can’t share details about the upcoming project, McNamara says he is excited for audiences to watch the movie.
“I can’t really say much,” McNamara said during a red carpet interview at the BFI London Film Festival, “but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.”
Not much has been revealed about the upcoming Ocean’s 11 prequel aside from its setting, director, and producer. The film is set in 1960s Europe, far from the setting of the original film and the George Clooney-led trilogy.
The movie will be directed by Jay Roach, who is best known for his work in the Austin Powers film series. The director previously worked with Robbie in Bombshell, with the actress receiving an Academy Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role.
The project will be produced by Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment, which she co-founded with her husband Tom Ackerley, Sophia Kerr, and McNamara. The production company was one of the producers of Barbie. When asked about the prospect of reuniting Gosling and Robbie after the box-office success of Barbie, McNamara says he hopes for more projects for the duo. “They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.”
The Ocean’s movie franchise has spanned three mainline titles and one spin-off. The original trilogy featured a recurring ensemble cast led by George Clooney as Danny Ocean, Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, and Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan. Supporting characters included Hollywood A-listers like Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle, and Bernie Mac.
The spin-off film Ocean’s 8 featured an all-female heist crew led by Sandra Bullock as Danny’s sister Debbie Ocean. The ensemble cast for the spin-off includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. Chinese actor Qin Shaobo is the only cast member to be featured in all four movies.
It will be interesting to see who will be joining Robbie and Gosling in the Ocean’s 11 prequel. No other cast member has been revealed. However, given that the previous films had an impressive lineup of stars, we expect that the prequel will also feature a number of Hollywood A-listers. Hopefully, we will get more information about the cast and plot once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends.
There is currently no release date for the untitled Ocean’s 11 prequel as of writing.
