Ocean’s Eleven remake featuring Margot Robbie will begin filming soon

Warner Bros. has set a date to start filming its planned remake of the original Ocean’s 11 which premiered in 1960.

The George Clooney-led Ocean’s Eleven franchise is one of the most popular heist films in Hollywood film history. The film, released in 2001, featured an ensemble cast and delivered entertainment to numerous cinemagoers. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery is working on a remake of the original Ocean’s Eleven film, which came out in the 1960s. The film, which is currently untitled, will star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and is set to begin shooting on March 6.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will star in Warner Bros. Discovery's Ocean's Eleven remake.

This new information is courtesy of a listing found on the official Film & Television Industry Alliance website with a project summary that reads, "Remake of the original Ocean’s Eleven that is set in Europe in the 1960s starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie." The listing has identifed the film’s director as Jay Roach, the man behind Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Bombshell. It also confirmed Carrie Solomon has signed on as the writer and mentions a host of names, including Gary Ross, Josey McNamara, and Olivia Milch as the producers.

The forthcoming Ocean’s Eleven’s existence was first reported last year with claims that it is part of Warner Bros.’s new strategy to produce big-budget, cinema-worthy releases led by Hollywood stars. However, the reports stated that it will be set in Europe and will serve as a prequel to the George Clooney-led trilogy. With the FTIA listing, it seems this isn't the case.

The original Ocean's Eleven premiered in 1960 and starred members of the Rat Pack.

The original Ocean’s 11 is a 1960 heist film directed and produced by Lewis Milestone. It followed a group of World War II veterans as they executed five Las Vegas casino robberies simultaneously. The film starred five members of the Rat Pack – Sinatra, Martin, Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, as Danny Ocean, Sam Harmon, Josh Howard, Jimmy Foster, and Mushy O’Connors respectively. It also starred Richard Conte, Angie Dickinson, and Cesar Romero in other roles.

The George Clooney-led 2001 film was a remake of the 1960 original. However, it featured a modern setting. Like the 1960 film, it had a star-studded cast, which included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, and Bernie Mac, among others. The film enjoyed highly positive reviews and also performed well at the box office with two further installments, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, following in 2004 and 2007. It also spawned an all-female cast spin-off titled Ocean’s Eight which premiered in 2018.

Apart from the fact that Robbie and Gosling will star in the new Ocean’s Eleven film, we've virtually no other information available on it. However, this is unsurprising since production is still in the very early stages. Since filming will begin in March, Warner Bros. Discovery will likely release additional details soon, including the full cast and crew members as well as the film’s tentative release date.

By the way, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Ocean Eleven remake is the second project Robbie and Gosling will star in together in recent times following their respective appearances as Barbie and Ken in the forthcoming Barbie film set to debut on July 21.
