Danny Ocean's cinematic universe just got a lot wider.
Nearly four years after the ensemble all-female spin-off, Ocean's 8, came out in June 2018, Warner Bros. is working on a prequel starring Margot Robbie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie will star and produce the upcoming prequel alongside Tom Ackerley. In addition, the film will see Robbie reunite with Jay Roach, who directed her to a best-supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in 2019's workplace sexual harassment drama, Bombshell.
The report adds that, while the movie is in active development, Warner Bros. still has not greenlit it yet. If all goes well, the project will begin production in spring 2023.
The Ocean's franchise is based on the 1960's Rat Pack film of the same name. The original trilogy, which was edited, directed, and produced by Steven Soderbergh, grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office with the 2018 sequel pushing it past the billion-dollar mark, to $1.17 billion. Despite getting multiple sequels, the first outing from 2001 is still widely considered the best in the series.
Robbie has enjoyed a series of high-profile releases and critically acclaimed performances after her breakout role in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street. The Australian actress would later land a gig as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe, appearing in three superhero films with more likely on the table after taking a break from portraying Joker's equally deranged paramour. In addition to the Ocean's movies, Robbie is also attached to a potential Pirates of the Caribbean sequel/reboot.
