Jim Ryan, the emblematic force steering Sony and PlayStation's voyage, has decided to chart a new course for himself.

After three decades of impeccable service, navigating through stormy seas and clear skies alike, Ryan is retiring as soon as the current fiscal year ends in March 2024. It's certainly a turning point, not just for him but also for the brand he has been synonymous with.

Imagine dedicating 30 years to a cause, a dream, a vision. Jim Ryan did exactly that. Making his start in 1994 with Sony's European wing, he carved a niche for himself and went on to head the PlayStation enterprise. In his announcement, one of Sony's longest-tenured Sony employees highlighted his career, saying: "I've relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners." However, like several others in the same position demanding incessant global attention, the challenge of balancing personal life in the UK with professional responsibilities in the US weighed on his decision.

Undoubtedly, the most significant milestone during his tenure was overseeing the PlayStation 5 launch. It doesn't take anything longer than a quick search to tell you about the tumultuous times the PS5 faced during its release, especially grappling with pandemic-induced supply chain hitches. Yet, against the odds, it bounced back in style. Sony's report in July showcasing a whopping 40 million PS5 sales is a testament to that. With a knack for the industry's intricacies, Ryan even spearheaded PlayStation's seamless shift towards direct competition with Xbox Game Pass, through revamping their subscription service, PS Plus.
