James Gunn shoots down Superman Legacy casting rumors again

A fan asked Gunn for confirmation that DC was close to casting a lead actor for Superman: Legacy. The DC Studios chief responded by saying that the rumor wasn't true and that he hasn't spoken to anyone about the role.

"Not true. Haven't had a single talk with a single actor about the role. Just making private lists," Gunn tweeted, effectively not just shutting down this specific rumor but also any other potential 'leak' naming any names.

Randolph responded to Gunn's dismissal of her tweet by saying she had heard that Lerman was DC's top choice as Superman. "Interesting, since it's "not true" I guess I can say I heard his top choice is Logan Lerman," Randolph shared.

Gunn followed up by saying that he does not know the actor, but he does recognize him from his work and thinks that he is talented. He then goes on to say that the actor wasn't even part of his list - unsurprising if he didn't know his name.

"Guys, this isn't a dig at the actor," Gunn tweets. "I don't know lots of actors' names. Now that you tell me who he is, I recognize him from stuff and think he's talented. But I've never met him, and he's never been part of a conversation about playing Superman."

This is not the first time that Gunn has debunked rumors of Superman: Legacy castings. The director previously shot down rumors that Euphoria actor Jacob Elordi was attached to the project as the Man of Steel.

There has been a lot of attention to the casting of the new Superman as he will be replacing Henry Cavill. Fans have been disappointed that Cavill will not be returning to DC after Black Adam teased his return. However, Gunn has made it clear that Cavill wasn't fired from his role. Gunn states, "Cavill was not fired. Henry was just not hired to be Superman."

Superman: Legacy is coming to theaters on July 11, 2025.
