Warner Bros. Discovery reveals Superman: Legacy’s plot synopsis

The DCU will start things off with Superman: Legacy, which will chronicle the Kryptonian’s efforts to reconcile his alien and human heritage.

Following the announcement that James Gunn will direct Superman: Legacy, Warner Bros. Discovery has now released an official plot synopsis for the Superman reboot that will kick off the Peter Safran and James Gunn DC Studios era.

Superman: Legacy is currently in pre-preproduction.

Here's the plot synopsis for Superman: Legacy:

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

While it provides some insight into the forthcoming film, notably the fact that the character, who is younger than 40, will be showing the world what truth, justice, and kindness really mean, it reveals little else about the film.

The synopsis also neglects to mention any specific villain or struggle that the caped hero will take on. Nevertheless, the Man of Steel should have enough on his hands trying to demonstrate the importance of truth and kindness to an unkind world.

One of the many appeals of the character is his ability to enforce these virtues and take on powerful villains who threaten them.

James Gunn recently confirmed he will be directing the film off a script he wrote.

By the way, the confirmation that Gunn will direct Superman: Legacy came in a series of tweets the filmmaker posted to his Twitter account a few days ago. In the tweets, the DC executive revealed that he was uncertain he wanted to direct the film but his co-CEO, Peter Safran, and other unnamed persons pestered him. He communicated his excitement about the movie and expressed his love for the script he has spent the past few months developing.

In a rare show of vulnerability, Gunn shared that the film’s release date of July 11 coincides with late dad’s birthday without whose support he wouldn’t be working on the film.

Superman: Legacy is currently in pre-production. Apart from the title, as well as the fact that Gunn will be directing and Safran producing, there is little to no information available on the film. However, Gunn recently revealed that there will be major casting announcements in the next six months, which indicate the studio’s behind-the-scenes efforts to get the ball rolling on their projects.

By the way, Gunn and Safran’s five movies and five television series slate tagged Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, apart from Superman: Legacy, includes a Batman film titled The Brave and the Bold as well as a Supergirl film titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Believe it or not, this represents less than half of the planned projects in their overarching ten-year plan for the DCU, according to Gunn.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
