With that said, many fans will agree with Black. The death of Red Dead Online aside, Rockstar Games struck gold when it came out with one of the best narrative-driven games of all time right around the same time as some of the best GTA titles. Both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 received critical acclaim at launch while fans have been begging Rockstar to remake 2004's Red Dead Revolver.

If given the right budget, cast, and marketing push, a cowboy-centric universe could work.

But, of course, Rockstar will have to say yes to the project first. Keep in mind that this is the same company that said no to having Eminem star in a live-action adaptation of Grand Theft Auto.

Besides, financially speaking, Rockstar doesn't really need it. Grand Theft Auto 5 is the second-best-selling video game of all time and the most profitable media product of all time with sales north of $6 billion as of last year. Meanwhile, the Red Dead franchise has sold 73 million units so far, so a failed adaptation could do more harm than good. But, of course, things can always change, and after seeing The Last of Us, Rockstar could think of challenging themselves to do the same.

After all, Sony's all-in on the live-action adaptation thing with shows and films based on Horizon, Twisted Metal, and God of War, all in development at the moment.
