Batman's buddy cop

The character of James Gordon has been tied to the Batman mythos for the longest time. In fact, Gordon has been there since Batman's first appearance in DC Comics' Detective Comics issue #27 (1939).

Although Gordon started with the police commissioner position and that is the most familiar role the character has played, he has been portrayed with various ranks, from a street level officer to Lieutenant and Police Captain. One constant is that Gordon plays Batman's closest ally and friend with police authority in the city of Gotham.
