Hugh Jackman announced that he was retiring from the role of Wolverine shortly before filming started on his supposedly final project as the mutant superhero. Then, after Logan was released in 2017, the actor resisted the urge to come back and play as X-men mainstay in the succeeding years.

Jackman could have decided to give up on the role as he is getting older, and perhaps the brutal routine of maintaining amazing shape year-round to play the role has taken its toll.

Fans were shocked when Ryan Reynolds released a bombshell trailer for the third movie in the Deadpool series with Jackman returning as Wolverine. In typical Ryan Reynolds fashion, the actor casually invites Jackman to play Wolverine "one more time.

The trailer sent shockwaves throughout the Marvel fandom. Fans were ecstatic to find out that Wolverine, a mutant and a member of the X-Men, will finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The implications for the future of the whole Marvel universe were so huge that even Kevin Feige was excited.
