The Last of Us, which streamed on HBO Max and was a fixture on HBO, was one of the most successful TV shows to premiere, not just this year, but ever. It was a critical success and enjoyed massive viewership. More importantly, it proved that it’s possible to bring video games to the small screen (and big) and make it just as good as the source material if not better.
As fans look forward to the premiere of the now-delayed multiple new seasons, the hit series is giving fans a reason to celebrate as it enjoys the distinction of being the first video game adaptation to earn an Emmy nomination. But, that’s not all, because the show enjoyed the second-most Emmy Awards nominations for this year.
On Wednesday, the 75th Emmy Awards released its nominations for the world to see, and The Last of Us scored itself a whopping 24 nominations. Three of these nominations were in the biggest categories – best drama series, best actor in a drama series for Pedro Pascal, and best actress in a drama series for Bella Ramsey.
Other categories that the show was nominated in are Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, among others.
The small-screen adaptation of the popular video game was only surpassed by Succession, another HBO series, which had three more nominations with 27. The White Lotus Season 2, another HBO television series, came third with 23 nominations.
The third season of the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso and Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 make up the top five with 21 and 14 nominations, respectively.
Pascal was one of the most involved actors of the night, which is a testament to his talent and astuteness in choosing his projects. The Mandalorian, another television series in which he is a lead character, picked up nine nominations, although none of them were in the major categories.
Pascal also picked up two other nominations, asides his best actor nod.
These nominations are Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for that Saturday Night Live appearance on February 4 and Outstanding Narrator for his work on the CNN documentary series Patagonia: Life On The Edge Of The World.
The Last of Us has many fans, and they’ll be rooting for it to pick up as many awards as possible on September 18. The date is still tentative, though, because of the ongoing WGA strike and the threat of a second strike by the SAG-AFTRA.
If Hollywood doesn’t resolve its strike issues soon, the awards ceremony could well be moved back to November or even January.
