First Mortal Kombat 12 teaser emerges from hell

Mortal Kombat 12 was confirmed to be a part of Warner Bros. Discovery's release pipeline for the year a few months back.

It's fitting that Mortal Kombat 12 will reboot the entire franchise on its 30th anniversary.

Mortal Kombat 12 is being teased by NetherRealm Studios through a cryptic video, and its release has been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav; however, the formal unveiling date remains uncertain.

Is NetherRealm Studios preparing to do an official reveal of Mortal Kombat 12? Well, fans certainly seem to think so.

The long-time Mortal Kombat developers uploaded a two-minute clip on their YouTube channel where it thanked the fans who’ve helped make the controversial franchise one of the most commercially successful video game properties of all time. Series co-creator, Ed Boon, ended the video with a very simple but also, hype-inducing phrase, as he said, “we’re not quite done yet.” Then came a bizarre 10-second clip filled with the hyper-detailed grain of sand that fans believe is NetherRealm confirming the story of Mortal Kombat 12.
It’s going to take a much longer article to explain to you what’s gone on in Mortal Kombat so far, but the gist is the end of Mortal Kombat 11 basically gave NetherRealm an out to reboot the entire franchise.

Specifically, the “good” ending of the Mortal Kombat 11 DLC, Aftermath, sees Liu Kang establish a new universe that looks fairly similar to the first Mortal Kombat game albeit with some changes.

Hardcore fans consider the explosion of the grains of sand as the birth of an entirely new universe.

This marks the first time that NetherRealm has teased Mortal Kombat 12 after Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav, confirmed its release date earlier this year.

However, before the “official” confirmation, we’ve gotten several hints from NetherRealm and other parties about the status of the next Mortal Kombat game. The most recent teases came from SonicFox, who hinted at an imminent announcement. Finally, trusted insiders claimed that Mortal Kombat 12 could be formally unveiled at this month’s still-unconfirmed PlayStation Showcase.

Whether or not Mortal Kombat 12 will be revealed soon remains to be seen. But, with a plethora of opportunities to do so in the next few months, NetherRealm and Warner Bros. will have the pick of the litter.

The lore of Mortal Kombat is actually quite interesting if you can find the time to go down that rabbit hole.

Of course, we shouldn’t get our hopes too high. Keep in mind that Warner Bros. Discovery recently delayed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League to next year.
