There’s something extraordinary about Final Fantasy VII. The gripping story, characters, and music of the original game are deeply rooted in the hearts of many. But, as the years rolled on, fans sought closure. Enter the visually breathtaking, yet narratively perplexing CGI film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, released in 2005.
visual spectacle with electrifying action sequences, it served as the only sequel to the events of the original game, which aimed to grant a form of closure, though some felt it raised more questions than it answered.
Having said that, a new revelation is causing a wave of excitement and intrigue among enthusiasts. Tetsuya Nomura, a legendary figure in the Square Enix roster and director of the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has recently ignited a fiery discussion. Nomura has not only played a significant role in crafting the beloved original game but also directed the CGI successor. Now, steering the ship of the Final Fantasy VII remake project, he drops a hint that sent fans dancing to the tune of the franchise’s iconic Victory Fanfare tune.
In a candid interview with The Guardian, Nomura made a tantalizing claim regarding the trajectory of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. He indicated that by the climax of the series, there will be a connection or “link” to Advent Children. This single statement carries with it a realm of possibilities and speculations. The specific nature of this “link” remains shrouded in mystery, but for fans of the film, this news is undoubtedly promising.
Diving back into the past, Advent Children picked up two years following the climactic events of Final Fantasy VII. Cloud Strife, the story’s brooding protagonist, found himself combating a new, sinister force and navigating a world grappling with the aftermath of Sephiroth’s malevolent campaign. The movie showcased the remnants of Sephiroth’s presence, casting a foreboding shadow, and setting up a narrative that revolved around a quest for resurrection.
The sequel isn’t set after the events of the original. Instead, it picks up directly following Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive as well, skipping the PlayStation 4 entirely despite using the same engine. If nothing else, the project looks promising with jaw-dropping visuals, expanded lore, and a revitalized gameplay experience.
With the recent trailer release, players caught glimpses of familiar terrains, celebrated characters, and unexpected twists and turns, ahead of its release on February 29, 2024.
Yet, one can’t help but reflect upon the curious decision to integrate elements or perhaps thematic threads from Advent Children into the games. Given the CGI film’s position as a narrative successor, its integration within the game’s storyline indicates a bold, non-linear approach to storytelling.
What’s fascinating is a little easter egg tucked away in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. In one particular encounter with the enigmatic Sephiroth, Cloud’s peculiar reaction is reminiscent of a specific scene in Advent Children. Could this be a nod to the interconnected narrative threads between the game and the film? Or is it laying the groundwork for something grander?
Of course, this doesn’t change the divisive and polarizing reception to Advent Children. It was an action-packed affair that was beautiful for its time. Surprisingly enough, it holds up well, at least in the CGI department. But, that’s all it had going for it. The confusing if unnecessary narrative, as we’ve already mentioned, left more questions that remain unanswered to this day.
Thankfully, Nomura’s statement suggests that things might literally come full circle and we’ll find out more by the end of the sequel. Who knows? Maybe the playable portion with Zack Fair might give us clues about what exactly links these two projects, which are separated by nearly two decades in real life.
Nevertheless, what’s undeniable is the passion, love, and commitment that goes into each iteration, be it a game or a film, within the Final Fantasy VII universe.
As fans across the globe anticipate Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and await the completion of the remake trilogy, there’s hope that the concluding chapters offer a satisfying, coherent, and memorable experience, linking the past, present, and perhaps even the future.
Speaking of Final Fantasy 7, don’t forget that there’s a way to get the Final Fantasy 7 Remake for free. Finally, if you’ve played through the first game, Square Enix will reward you for having an existing save file when playing FF7 Rebirth.
