Ed Boon isn't about to let controversial microtransactions and a botched release on the Nintendo Switch stop his studio, NetherRealm Studios, from extending the life of Mortal Kombat 1 via post-launch content, which potentially includes a massive story expansion in the same vein as the ones that the previous installments received.

As teased by the co-creator of the series during a recent appearance at the Comic Con Experience 2023 in Brazil, Boon's promise includes a plethora of additional content for Mortal Kombat 1, highlighted by a major story expansion.

Boon's announcement suggests a familiar roadmap for Mortal Kombat 1, similar to the one that Mortal Kombat 11 had enjoyed in the past. After years of support, which culminated in the release of the Aftermath expansion and a next-gen update, NetherRealm eventually dropped Mortal Kombat 11 to focus work on Mortal Kombat 1. This years-long strategy will likely involve the release of at least one new campaign that builds on the existing narrative, accompanied by a fresh wave of downloadable content characters. This approach should enrich the game's universe all the while extending its relevance in the competitive fighting game genre.
