NetherRealm Studios intends to continue what it started with Mortal Kombat 11 by extensively supporting Mortal Kombat 1.

Ed Boon isn’t about to let controversial microtransactions and a botched release on the Nintendo Switch stop his studio, NetherRealm Studios, from extending the life of Mortal Kombat 1 via post-launch content, which potentially includes a massive story expansion in the same vein as the ones that the previous installments received.

As teased by the co-creator of the series during a recent appearance at the Comic Con Experience 2023 in Brazil, Boon’s promise includes a plethora of additional content for Mortal Kombat 1, highlighted by a major story expansion.

Boon’s announcement suggests a familiar roadmap for Mortal Kombat 1, similar to the one that Mortal Kombat 11 had enjoyed in the past. After years of support, which culminated in the release of the Aftermath expansion and a next-gen update, NetherRealm eventually dropped Mortal Kombat 11 to focus work on Mortal Kombat 1. This years-long strategy will likely involve the release of at least one new campaign that builds on the existing narrative, accompanied by a fresh wave of downloadable content characters. This approach should enrich the game’s universe all the while extending its relevance in the competitive fighting game genre.

Despite all the criticism, Mortal Kombat 1 has already made a significant mark since its release, selling well enough top sales charts in its launch month and even winning an award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023, much to the bewilderment of its own players.

The DLC roadmap for Mortal Kombat 1 is already well underway, with the recent introduction of Omni-Man from the hit animated superhero parody, Invincible, and the impending arrival of Quan Chi on December 14. This is followed by the anticipated debut of John Cena’s Peacemaker in February 2024. The inclusion of these characters from previous entries and other franchises helps broaden the game’s appeal while showcasing NetherRealm Studios’ commitment to keeping the content fresh and exciting.

To be fair, most of the criticism towards Mortal Kombat 1 isn't aimed at its gameplay.

Boon’s hint at a massive surprise following the story expansion has sparked intrigue and speculation. This could range from an additional Kombat Pack to an entirely new concept within the franchise. The prospect of further extending the support for Mortal Kombat 1, potentially beyond the typical two-year cycle, indicates a strategic shift for NetherRealm Studios, aiming to maintain the game’s relevance and player engagement in the long term.

With Street Fighter VI and Tekken 8 breathing down Mortal Kombat 1’s neck, NetherRealm is aware that it has to bring its A-game for this generation.

NetherRealm Studios has always been good for the money when it comes to post-launch support.

Ultimately, the winners here are the fighting game fans who are getting the absolute cream of the crop.
