2019’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was a global box office hit, pulling in nearly $450 million against a $150 million budget. More importantly, it was beloved by audiences and critics alike, en route to becoming one of the best game adaptations of all time.
But, for some reason, Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, and The Pokemon Company haven’t given us an update about a new installment – until now.
Deadline is claiming that Legendary is working things out with a new creative team to get started on a sequel.
The report claims that Rob Letterman’s replacement will be Jonathan Kirsel, with Chris Galleta interested to write the script. It isn’t clear if Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith are returning but the former is highly unlikely, at least, as Pikachu, following the events of the first movie. However, the report suggests that the upcoming MCU actor will play a role in the follow-up.

If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see how Pokemon: Detective Pikachu 2 works out.
Since 2019, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’s relationship has imploded. Legendary recently struck a new deal with Sony Pictures, and while it owns the rights to make live-action adaptations, its bitter goodbye with Warner Bros. could muddy the waters.
In addition, Netflix will want to get a piece of the Pokemon pie as it’s working closely with The Pokemon Company on a new stop-motion anime and live-action series.
Speaking of Pokemon, The Pokemon Company recently confirmed that a two-part expansion is coming to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. On top of this, the Pokemon Sleep app finally has a release date.
