After wowing audiences with Dead Cells and its post-launch content, including an unlikely but very welcome crossover with Castlevania, Motion Twin is now ready for its next adventure, and it’s going to blow you away.
Officially revealed at this year’s The Game Awards, Windblown is a “lightning-fast combat roguelite”, this new entry is a significant leap from their previous title, offering both single and online cooperative multiplayer experiences for up to three players.
Set in a vibrant 3D isometric world, Windblown combines the intense character-action combat reminiscent of Dead Cells with the dynamic roguelike action akin to Hades, but at an even more accelerated pace.
Windblown invites players to step into the shoes of anthropomorphic warriors known as Leapers. The agile fighters are tasked with battling the Vortex and its Sentinel minions. The animated trailer showcased revealed a rich combination of presumably playable characters – warrior lizards, axolotls, and bats, all equipped with an array of weapons and shields. These Leapers possess rocket thrusters, enhancing their agility and speed, which is a central theme of the game.
One of the key aspects of Windblown is its combat system, described by Motion Twin as tough but always fair. This is a system built to encourage players to learn from each run and each defeat. The Leapers have the unique ability to absorb the memories of fallen warriors, thus mastering various fighting styles to unlock their full potential. The learning curve involves switching weapons and builds on the fly, adapting to increasingly challenging situations and acquiring more complex and powerful weapons as the game progresses.
The best part is Windblown is launching in 2024 on Windows PC via Steam Early Access. A release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X aren’t out of the question but it might come at a later date. The announcement has generated plenty of excitement, given the studio’s reputation for unique, engaging and innovative gameplay experience. The game’s fast-paced action, coupled with its co-op multiplayer element, is a new direction for the developer, building on the success of Dead Cells while venturing into uncharted territory.
Windblown’s setting, The Ark, is an open, ever-changing landscape teeming with secrets, offering the players a dynamic environment to explore. The ability to absorb the memories of fallen warriors adds a strategic layer to gameplay, which allows players to continuously evolve their combat style. This mechanic also ensures that each run is unique, keeping the gameplay fresh and challenging.
With its unique blend of fast-paced action, vibrant 3D visuals, and cooperative gameplay, Windblown is poised to be a significant addition to the roguelike genre. Motion Twin’s commitment to crafting a game that combines speed, action, and strategy, evident in their previous titles, is sure to make this indie title a game to watch out for in the coming year.
As players eagerly await the Early Access launch, the anticipation for this new venture by Dead Cells’ creators continues to grow.
Speaking of The Game Awards, Baldur’s Gate 3 took home the crown at the event for this year after wowing audiences on PC and PlayStation 5 a few months ago. And, oh, it shadow dropped on Xbox as well.
