In the days when Final Fantasy XVI was but a twinkle in the eyes of avid gamers, Naoki Yoshida, the project's lead, was a little hesitant about the idea of downloadable content. He emphasized the focus on delivering a full and polished game that was worth the price of admission, commenting that he and his team wanted "players to have the satisfaction that equals what they paid for or more." The priority was to build a complete original game, a universe expansive enough to satiate the appetites of ravenous fans. Well, that universe is getting a whole lot bigger now, and it turns out, Square Enix has been listening intently to its community.

Contrary to initial impressions, Square Enix has confirmed FF16 will indeed welcome new content. Yoshida announced a pair of two DLCs coming to FF16 in a special video message.

The announcement, dropped amid Square Enix's "Voices from Valisthea" panel at PAX West 2023, excited fans given the latest Final Fantasy entry has become one of the standout releases of the year.

Despite launching as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Final Fantasy 16 has sold more than 3 million copies and garnered critical acclaim, although its exclusivity has limited its potential audience compared to the likes of Final Fantasy 15.
